- Abstract
- The protective effects of black rice from oxidative stress were investigated under cellular system using LLC-PK1 renal epithelial cells. The oxidative stress induced by 2,2'-azobis (2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride (AAPH) led to the loss of cell viability and increase of lipid peroxidation. However, the treatment of methanol extract from black rice significantly increased the cell viability and inhibited lipid peroxidation. In addition, the protective effect of black rice against nitric oxide (NO)-induced oxidative stress was also studied under cellular system. The oxidative stress were induced by the treatment with generators of peroxynitrite, 3-morpholinosydnonimine, and its precursors NO and superoxide anion produced by sodium nitroprusside and pyrogallol, respectively. The treatment of black rice extract attenuated NO-induced oxidative stress through the elevation in cell viability and decrease in lipid peroxidation. The present study suggests that black rice would have the protective effect from radical-induced oxidative stress in cellular system. (Cancer Prev Res 15, 158-163, 2010)
