Abstract
This study aims at comparing and contrasting the word formation of the burger series, the collar series, and the candy series neologisms and exploring the possibility to give a unified explanation within the “extended” notion of the H-type word formation. Cho (2019) suggests that H-type word formation should be recognized as a new way of word formation because there are differences in meaning between the parent word and the off-spring series. Employing Cho (2019), this study reveals that the collar series and the candy series have a parent word, which behaves similarly to the parent word in the burger series. This study argues that the series neologisms can belong to the H-type word formation if the notion of the H-type word formation is extended to include this condition: the parent word must be produced and ready to serve as a basis for potential series production, whether the parent word is made by blending or compounding. Therefore, the segmented element of the parent word can be treated as a “remnant.” This study provides an integrated explanation of these types of word formations.
