Abstract

In recent years, the study of English abstracts has drawn the attention of many researchers. However, research on the linguistic characteristics of moves in research article abstracts within the English linguistics discipline has been relatively scarce in Korea compared to other academic disciplines. English abstracts typically employ various moves to present information on the introduction, purpose, method, results, and conclusion of the study in order to promote it. This paper aims to explore the differences in linguistic features between moves in English abstracts written by native writers and non-native writers by analyzing a sample of 50 abstracts from each group. The study reveals significant differences in linguistic fundamentals such as statistical measures, word lists, Nation’s word list (2012), verb tense, and keywords between the moves of the two groups. These findings can assist academic writers in mastering the conventions of academic writing in the English linguistics discipline.
