- Abstract
- The purpose of this paper is to validate an inventory to find out the English learning instrumental motivation of Korean adult learners in terms of the perception of needs. A total of 946 students at a local Korean university have participated in the survey for perceived needs of English. As a result of factor analyses using reference scales for convergent validity, learners’ needs are measured in the form of quadrant scale framework, including daily life, employment, career, and class pursuit. The needs for job-seeking as a short-term goal was separately identified and the category of career needs was subdivided into career and employment categories. The needs of English for staying in overseas countries was found to belong not to daily life needs but to the career needs category. Proper and timely diagnosis of English learners’ motivation can serve as a springboard to promote English learning. A more-detailed and easy-to-use measurement scale might be able to assist teachers and learners in facilitating intended learning outcomes.
