- Abstract
- 본 연구는 빅토리아 시대 영국 YMCA가 스포츠를 수용한 배경에 대해 고찰한 결과 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. 첫째, 빅토리아 시대 YMCA는 하층 중간계층 노동자들이 남성성을 고양할 수 있는 단체였다. 둘째, 영국 YMCA는 초창기 스포츠를 회원 확보를 위한 근간으로 삼았다. 셋째, 영국 YMCA로 유입된 스포츠는 자본가 계급의 생산성 향상과 지배를 공고히 하는 수단으로 이용되었다. 이러한 사실은 빅토리아 시대 영국 YMCA가 근대적 스포츠의 대중화와 확산을 위한 동인이되었음을 방증한다.
