Abstract
This paper aims to explore the syntactic and semantic differences between English and Korean adverbial clauses and to propose how to avoid the problems that can arise in the translation of Korean to English due to the differences. This paper has argued that English adverbial clauses may have different semantic and pragmatic nuances depending on their position. Not all English expressions that occur at the beginning of sentences are focused contrary to what is widely assumed among Koreans. This paper has shown, based on Rizzi’s Split CP Hypothesis, that there are different syntactic positions in front of subject position. Also, this paper has argued that adverbial clauses that occur at the end of sentences tend to be focused and those that occur at the beginning of sentences, topicalized. It emphasized that translators and scholars of translation studies must have a deep knowledge of the syntactic and semantic/pragmatic differences between Korean and English to be able to perform translation successfully and to improve translation studies.
