dc.description.abstractRecently, Japanese course of study have been amended. The course of study in elementary schools and middle schools were amended and promulgated on March 28, 2008 and that in high schools on March 9, 2009. The former is called 2008 version and the latter 2009 version course of study. The new course of study will be put in operation from 2011 in elementary schools, 2012 in middle schools and 2013 in high schools. To summarize the characteristics, those can be defined as the reinforcement of nationalistic colors in terms of contents and the emphasis of the fostering of thinking power, judgment and expressive power. Factors that affected these amendments the most include the amendment of the basic education law and controversies about lowered scholarly attainments. By the influence of the amended basic education law, substantiality of education on Japanese traditions and cultures and affection for Japanese history etc are being emphasized. Thus history education can be evaluated to have been reinforced in its nationalistic colors. Besides, to solve the problem of lowered scholarly attainments, the number of hours of lessons was increased and at the same time, those learning methods and language activities aimed to bring up thinking power, judgment and expressive power which are insufficient in Japanese students are being highly valued. These changes in learning methods imply many things for Korean history education too. The fact that learning methods considering the characteristics of history and the levels of development of learners such as surveying, discussing on history and studying by utilizing diverse data is worth referring to. Also, the insufficiency of expressive power such as debates, discourses is the reality of Korea too due to the entrance examination oriented education. Continued interests and studies are required on how the methods, principles and activities provided in the Japanese course of study for teaching history are being realized in actual fields of lessons.-
