- Abstract
- Similar expressions are not identical in their implications and usages, even if they might share common basic meanings. I conducted research on how well Korean secondary school English teachers understand the differences between similar modal auxiliary verbs and similar main verbs by asking 64 teachers to translate 14 Korean sentences into English. It turned out that most did not recognize the differences in implications and usages between similar modal auxiliaries and verbs of English they use when Korean does not have exactly matching equivalents to them. The result of this research implies that a number of Korean translators and interpreters might frequently make errors in using similar English modal auxiliaries and verbs. Korean universities and graduate schools need to offer prospective English teachers and translators/interpreters courses in Korean and English comparative linguistics, providing in-depth education about the similarities and differences in meaning, nuance, connotation, and implication between similar expressions of the two languages.
