- Abstract
- The purpose of this paper is to investigate occurring conditions, a syntactic and semantic correlation with adjacent words, a corelation with each register and an occurrence in BNC, and a diachronic change over 200 years in COHA on the expression 'exception' meaning. Through the examination of the large-scale corpura such as BNC, COCA and COHA, this study discovered the following results. First, the expression 'except' occurs at the same surroundings of the left and right syntactically and at the whole-part relation semantically. Second, 'except for' is not in the parallel of the left and right words. This must be followed by a noun prase on the right. Third, the expression 'but' occurs with NPs related to a 'holistic' meaning on the left and parallelism of NPs on both sides of the expression. Fourth, 'other than' occurs with NPs related to 'non-holistic' meaning such as something and someone. Fifth, the frequency of 'exception' expressions is different depending on the registers of BNC as well as COCA.
