- Abstract
- This paper analyzed 「An Uprising of Spartacus」, Yasui Toshio’s representative teaching practice, and the evaluation about him, to clarify characteristics, limitation and implications of history study applying Empathy. The results of analysis are as follows.
First, the methodical meaning of the empathy stated in Yasui’s teaching is recognized, in regard that it takes a role to motivate a learner to acquire live knowledge of history, create independent judgment and study on history continually. Empathy may be applied as an effective method to promote the students’ independent learning.
Second, the concept of ‘an ardent desire’ drawn from Yasui’s empathy has an important meaning from the point of motivation of history inquiry. Given the fact that the students are interested only in acquiring historical knowledge for a test, considering history just as a memoriter course, a study on how to learn with ‘an ardent desire’ is an important task.
Third, the fact that Yasui set the final purpose of history study applying empathy on raising a supreme being has a pioneering meaning. Yasui argues that the final goal of history teaching is to raise a supreme being, which is possible by motivating the students to have live knowledge of history and independent judgment through empathy. At the time when the education is focused on delivering efficiently objective and scientific knowledge, his trial to motivate the students to acquire knowledge themselves and decide independently, setting his sights on raising supreme beings, is considered leading.
Fourth, the problems pointed out from the evaluation for Yasui’s teaching practice, were presented from the viewpoint of a learner’s pursuit of independence and scientific perception of history, and provide the clues to overcome the limitations of history study method applying empathy and to develop.
