Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of sport-for-development (SFD) program specifically designed for students from multicultural families. To achieve this purpose, we selected 5 multicultural students, 3 non-multicultural students, and 3 program instructors at Gyeongsang Province as study participants. Data were collected through observation and semi-structured interview from 11 study participants. The results of this study are as follows. First, team-based sport activities of SFD program provided an opportunity to form a successful peer relationship between multicultural and non-multicultural students by overcoming mutual prejudice and misunderstanding. Second, multicultural students showed an increased interest in sports and a positive attitude, and also improved their confidence through sports activities. Third, the study participants could learn mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation by breaking down the walls so called ‘difference’ though team-based sports activities of SFD program. Lastly, the study participants could learn various life skills through SFD program and the learned life skills were further transferred into a daily life. To maximize the impact of SFD program for multicultural students, SFD program should include not only sport-related activities, but also non-sport activities (e.g., discussion, writing, presentation).
