- Abstract
- This study examined the classroom practice of English classes in vocational high schools through the students' and teachers' perception. The participants included 635 students and 8 teachers in four vocational high schools in Changwon. The data were collected through surveys for students and interviews for teachers. The research questions were: how the students and teachers thought of their English classes; and, what the areas in need of improvement were. The study illustrated that most classes were run in a teacher-centered format focusing on general English. Even though such practice was against the recommendation of the national curriculum, the students did not think it problematic. The teachers also perceived this practice suitable for students. However, the findings indicated that the students' needs and interests were not reflected; at the same time, the teachers were deprived of opportunities for professional development. Pedagogical suggestions were offered.
