Abstract
This study investigates the spatial dispersion characteristics of ammonia emitted from pig farms and evaluates the effectiveness of odor mitigation strategies using the AERMOD dispersion model. Two swine facilities differing in scale and topography―located in Damyang (DY) and Yeongam (YA), South Korea―were selected for simulation. Ammonia dispersion was simulated over a 1 km × 1 km domain using actual meteorological and topographic data. Three mitigation scenarios (i.e., 25%, 50%, and 80% emission reduction) were applied to assess changes in dispersion distance and concentrations. Scenario 3 showed the greatest reduction in dispersion distance among all scenarios, with greater reductions observed in the YA region. Non-parametric statistical analysis confirmed that mitigation effects were more pronounced closer to the source. Multivariate analysis confirmed that mitigation level was the most influential factor affecting both ammonia concentrations and dispersion distance. Also, while farm scale and topography primarily influenced the dispersion distance, meteorological conditions had a greater effect on the concentrations. These findings underscore the need to incorporate both topographic and meteorological conditions into odor mitigation planning and associated odor regulation, in addition to site-specific livestock management policies.
