- Abstract
- This study applies the Appraisal framework within Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) to analyze twenty official apology statements issued by Chinese corporations over the past two years. The purpose is to examine how speakers’ attitudes and stances are realized through appraisal resources and to identify the socio-cultural functions these linguistic choices fulfill. The findings are as follows. First, within attitude appraisal, the category of “sadness” occurred most frequently, functioning as a resource to express remorse and empathy toward victims. In judgment appraisal, positive propriety dominated, highlighting adherence to norms and the fulfillment of responsibilities. Second, graduation appraisal appeared exclusively in the form of intensification, which served to strengthen the degree of apology, self-reflection, and remedial actions. Third, engagement appraisal was overwhelmingly realized through monoglossic voices, indicating the resolute acceptance of responsibility and sincerity of apology without leaving room for dispute. Fourth, appraisal expressions fulfilled four major socio-cultural functions: restoring relational trust, encouraging public participation, reinforcing social norms, and strengthening corporate social responsibility. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the discursive characteristics of Chinese apologies and provides a theoretical and practical basis for language pedagogy as well as comparative studies between Chinese and Korean apology discourse.
