- Abstract
- The aim of this study was to develop items for a screening tool that could effectively measure health literacy in adolescents. Health literacy is defined as the ability to understand health information, apply it to daily life, and make informed health-related decisions. To this end, 30 items were developed by integrating general health literacy skills such as information gathering, reading and comprehension, information utilization, and communication with human physiology-based health literacy skills that require a systemic interpretation of the human physiology. The item development process included three Delphi surveys to assess the importance and appropriateness of the items and solicit expert feedback to select the final items. The tool is suitable for measuring adolescents' health problem-solving skills in real-life situations and may be particularly useful in school-based life science education programs. The results of this study are expected to contribute to improving health literacy education and promoting healthy lifestyles among adolescents.
