Abstract
The purpose of this study was to analyze the expressive effects of the costumes worn by Queen Charlotte of the United Kingdom in visual media, based on the Delong’s theory. The research method first involved a literature review of prior domestic and international studies for theoretical research. Next, a case study was conducted using the over-the-top (OTT) dramas ‘Queen Charlotte (2023)’, ‘Bridgerton 1 (2020)’, and ‘Bridgerton 2 (2022)’ as visual media research tools. Based on the analysis of expressive effects, according to Delong’s theory, the costumes worn by Queen Charlotte in the dramas exhibited excitement, calmness, strength, and delicacy. These mostly aligned with Delong’s expressive effects. The young Charlotte displayed elegance with pure pastel tones and small, rounded decorative elements, although less than other expressive effects. When the Queen’s authority peaked, intense and bold colors and dominant line decoration elements exhibited the most expressive effect of intensity. Due to Queen Charlotte’s strong and charismatic traits in the drama, intensity was the most frequently derived expressive effect. The analysis showed that intensity was used most effectively to represent the Queen’s authority. Additionally, accessories such as wigs and necklaces were used in connection with various formative elements to maximize the expressive effect of intensity.
