- Abstract
- This paper presents a formal semantic analysis of comma-delimited constructions—namely, non-restrictive relative clauses, parentheticals, and appositive noun phrases—within the framework of conventional implicature. Building on Potts’s multidimensional semantics, the study reconceptualizes the comma as a compositional semantic operator that structures sentence meaning into layered representations ⟨p, π⟩, where p encodes truth-conditional content and π captures non-truth-conditional meaning such as speaker attitudes. The distinction between these tiers is substantiated through diagnostic criteria such as projection persistence, truth-conditional independence, and non-cancellability. By treating the comma as a trigger for semantic stratification rather than as mere punctuation, this study advances a principled approach to integrating surface-level cues into the machinery of formal semantic interpretation.
