- Abstract
- This study investigates the freezing and bursting behavior of welded joints in high-strength steel (SPFH590) structures under low-temperature conditions. Three welding pass configurations were tested: 3-pass with bead grinding, 5-pass with bead grinding, and 5-pass without bead grinding. Specimens were initially subjected to temperatures between -20 and -25°C for 6 h with 7080% internal water content, revealing freezing-induced expansion but no full rupture. To further evaluate the structural limits, the specimens were retested with 100% internal water content, which resulted in significant cracking and bursting. An experimental analysis using 3D scanning technology quantitatively measured the deformation patterns by comparing the tested specimens with their original 3D models. The color deviation results demonstrated the extent of expansion and provided insights into the influence of welding bead configurations on structural integrity. The findings indicate that bead grinding increased the susceptibility to cracking, whereas maintaining the welding bead significantly improved the resistance to freezing-induced damage. This study highlights the importance of design considerations to prevent freezing damage in welded structures, including optimized welding bead treatment and provisions for water drainage in cold environments.
