Abstract
Among the five categories of English inversions, PP and VP inversions are classified as locative and non-locative depending on the contexts, but NP, AP, and AdvP inversions are classified as non-locative. In order to solve these classification confusion, the purposes of this study is to find the meaning of locativeness by adopting Birner's (1992) theory of “semantic locativeness”, which expands and applies the meaning of prepositional components to temporal and abstract meanings as well as physical interpretations. The results show that in the NP, AP, AdvP-inversions where a complement in a sentence preposes in front of the verb, all such inversions indicating place and time exhibit semantic locativeness in the consideration of the preceding sentence and semantic context.
