Abstract
This study examines Merwin’s poetry through Deleuze’s rhizome and the Buddhist concept of emptiness. In particular, it deals with the connection and repetition of existence and examines the use of silence-oriented language. Deleuze’s rhizome and the Buddhist concept of emptiness are similar in that relationships are not fixed but change according to connections or conditions. It is also similar in that the relationship is not vertically oriented but horizontally branched out and continues. Merwin also deals with the change, circulation, and continuity of existence in his poems, and is similar in its orientation to rhizome and emptiness. He also emphasizes the use of silence-oriented language. Silence seems to be the passage that connects everything. He recognizes that language and the world are interdependent. In Buddhism, death is not a separate thing but a connection to another form of existence. These points can be seen as similar to Merwin’s ecological thinking.
