- Abstract
- This paper aims to develop a pragmatic (particularly, a relevance-theoretic) framework for understanding the use of sarcastic irony in political satire, with a focus on its manifestations in the UK and Korea. Huang (2015, p. 273) defines satire as the employment of derision, ridicule, irony, and humor to expose faults in people, ideas, institutions, or systems. Clark and Gerrig (1984) describe sarcastic irony as a linguistic mechanism for indirect criticism or ridicule of unacceptable behaviours or ideas. This study posits that satire and sarcastic irony, as outlined by Huang (2015), and Clark and Gerrig (1984), share fundamental characteristics. In practical terms, political satire is often a form of sarcastic irony, embedded in everyday language. This paper explores the realization of political satire within this pragmatic framework, treating it as a specific application of sarcastic irony.
