- Abstract
- Purpose: The popularity of Korean cultural content has been spreading globally through K-content, leading to positive image enhancement for the country and increased consumption of Korean products. This trend not only contributes to the growth of related industries but also results in positive economic effects for the nation. In this study, empirical analysis was conducted to examine the economic impact of the export of K-content in international trade.
Research design, data, and methodology: To analyze the trade-driving effect of K-content, time-series data from 2005 to 2021, specifically categorizing content industries into 11 sectors as per current standards, were utilized. The goal was to select the most extensive available period for this content classification.
Results: The empirical analysis shows that K-content exports significantly drive consumer goods exports. A $1,000 increase in K-content exports corresponds to a $1,315 increase in consumer goods exports, indicating a 1.3 times exportdriving effect. Notably, comics, movies, games, and intellectual property exports within K-content positively influence overall consumer goods exports, while other K-content categories show less impact on consumer goods export driving.
Implications: Due to the diverse nature of consumer goods, a more detailed analysis is needed to estimate the impact of each content category on exports.
This involves examining the influence of content exports on consumer goods at a granular level, considering product types, regions, and countries. Tailored export strategies should be developed based on these insights. It’s essential to simultaneously consider activating content with export-driving effects and improving the connectivity of content lacking such effects for a comprehensive approach to content exports.
