Abstract
This essay explains the way affects are transferred into and displaced by emotions and then poetic language as they enfold in context, focusing on affect’ impacts upon the narrative structure and development, as shown in Wordsworth’s poems such as “The Discharged Soldier,” “There was a Boy,” “Nutting,” “Resolution and Independence” and passages of The Prelude. As forces of encounters, affect induces abrupt shifts in narration, tone, and mood. Accordingly, this essay mainly concerns the gaps between affects, emotions, and words in poetic representation. Wordsworth intuitively understands the potentiality of affect, skillfully incorporating it into the poetic discourse, which in turn deviates from predictable direction and intentionality. At the same time, however, he struggles to regulate the flow of affect through representational tactics, punctuations, specific words, and the rhetorical power of repetition explained in his “Note to the Thorn.” For instance, “unawares” inscribes affect’s indeterminacy onto the poetic body prior to subjectivity and intentionality. Attending to the nonconscious, material power of affect, Wordsworth equates poetry with passion and accommodates the expressive ability of bodies.
