- Abstract
- After the publication of book of Ernest Sémichon, what we called, La paix et la trê̂ve de Dieu, the peace of God was drawn attention as the one among the important subjects about the social medieval history by medievalists. It is said that the peace of God was the great movement emerged in the end of the 10th century and it beared the feudal christianity composed in the medieval society. Above all, the medievalists had paid attention to the peace of God in the 11th century, especially, in the process of propagation as well as in the social transformation owing to its development.
Besides, the peace of God entered upon a new phase in the 12th century. In other words, the seigneurs had exploited the normalization of churches in Flandre, Bourgogne and Anjou in leading the peace of God in the 11th and the 12th centuries. Most of all, there was the remarkable passage from the peace of God to the that of normandy dukes in this period.
In 1042, the truce of God, the second stage of the peace of God, was announced in the council of Caen where the private combats were interdicted by the normandy churches from the night of Wednesday to the morning of Sunday, from Advent to Epiphany and from Ash Wednesday to Easter. In addition, the normandy bishops made the combatants suspend the military actions from rogation to Pentecost. In this article, we examine the normandy dukes as the legislators, the justiciars and the protectors of the public peace in tracing the passage from the peace of God to the that of normandy dukes in the 11th and the 12th centuries.
