Abstract

Syntactic theory has developed through the process of solving the problem of meaning. Therefore, it is important to consider the roles of semantics in the study of syntax. The goals of syntax is to rationally explain syntactic phenomena. Syntactic theory should provide theoretical explanation for syntactic phenomena, Semantics can provide a more rational explanatory power for syntactic theory by providing an system-external explanation related to meaning. In this paper, we showed that semantics can add rational explanatory power to the theoretical explanatory power of syntactic theory through several cases, and discussed matters to be vigilant for rational explanation of syntactic phenomena through semantics. At this point in time when the value of syntax research due to the development of AI is being questioned, semantics will be able to give a new value to syntax research, that is, the value of linguistics as the humanities.
