- Abstract
- This paper focuses on the metonymic game of linguistic and gesticulatory strategy to survive in the consistent boredom of mutistratal dailiness in the postmodern consumption society, where modernists, Descartes’ lunatic followers have made malformed with indefinite false signifiers. Such expressionistic and hyper-realistic plays as A Moon for the Misbegotten by Eugene O’Neill and Fool for Love by Sam Shepard audiovisually show the incest-related family tragedy caused by a father in American Western & Northeast myth. The main characters who suffer from delusional disorder, paranoia, and obsession exhibit regressive phenomena towards the past without concentrating on the present. They often mistake tongueslips and repeat forgetfulness to hide or elude their distorted past vestiges connected with sexual sadism and masochism while talkng to others with meaningless signifiers. Such active female characters as Josie, Abbie, and May who freely make Dionysian metonymic rhetorics can defeat the metaphorical linguisitic mechanism from some men abnormally obsessed with the past traces from the mirror stage of Jacques Lacan’s desire, metonymy of lack.
