Abstract
Objectives: This study was conducted to observe the associations between different types of households, health-related lifestyle, health service usage, and health outcomes across different age groups. Methods: This cross-sectional study was done using the data of 15,526 adults, aged 20 years and above, from the sixth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The data was evaluated by multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results: Our results indicated that among young adults, after adjusting for confounding factors, the odds ratios of current smoking, high risk drinking, and obesity for single-person households were 2.38, 1.70, and 1.51 compared with multi-person households and the odds ratios of chronic disease and depression were 2.00 and 4.01 respectively. For middle-aged adults, the odds ratio of chronic diseases for single-person households was 1.43 compared with multi-person households after adjusting for confounding factors. Contrastingly, no correlations could be identified between household types and factors of health inequality in older adults. Conclusion: Considering the increase of single-person households in Korea, monitoring the disparity in health depending on household types needs to be considered in preparing future health policies to address the age group-specific health inequalities.
