- Abstract
- As a sign, each national food closely connects the collective unconscious to unique historical experiences and social norms and thus contributes to the configuration of a distinctive cultural identity. In this respect, this paper compares Marcel Proust’s narrative of the madeleine in In Search of Lost Time and Sukyeong Huh’s narrative of Gukbap in Global Blues and sheds light on how each national food unfolds a specific network of emotions and feelings and connotes each individual style and aesthetic sensibility. Considering that the two writers belong to different symbolic systems in the East and the West, it would be very interesting to examine how differently each writer reveals a unique socio-psychological sentiment in the attempt to restore a sense of ‘being oneself’ in the face of the loss of social presence.
