- Abstract
- This study examined the secondary school teachers’ perceptions on English classes during the COVID-19 Pandemic era. Through in-depth interviews, the 8 participating teachers shared their experiences and perceptions on online and off-line classes. While each class mode had both pros and cons, they perceived that online classes were less effective than off-line classes on student learning. As there was little interaction between the teacher and students, it was difficult to assess students’ class participation and understanding in online classes. However, the impact worked differently depending on their proficiency and motivational level. Students with high proficiency and motivation tended to enjoy pre-recorded classes because they could study at their own pace, with repetitive viewing. Therefore, classroom teachers should be mindful of the pros and cons of each class mode as well as students’ learning styles and their proficiency level.
