Abstract
Objective: The present study aims to investigate the effect of touch-button size and touchscreen position of in-vehicle information system (IVIS) on task performance, glance behavior and subjective workload. Background: Touchscreen interface becomes popular in a driving context. Although touchscreen based IVIS has merits to provide more functions and information for drivers, previous studies pointed out that it can negatively affect driving behaviors and distractions. Method: To achieve the research objective, we conducted a driving simulation experiment involving both driving and non-driving tasks. A 2×2 within-subject design with touch-button size (1cm, 1.5cm, 2cm) and touchscreen position (bottom, mid, top) was designed. We measured touch task performance, glance behaviors, and subjective workload while performing tasks in different task conditions. Results: Overall, the result indicated that task performance increased, visual distraction and subjective workload were lower when touch-button size increases and touchscreen placed upward. Conclusion: Design variables of touch user interface in a driving context should be carefully designed considering driving behaviors. Application: The results in this study can provide insights into the design of touchscreen-based IVIS.
