- Abstract
- This study analysed the quantities of biology major contents which were involved in the secondary school biology textbooks, and surveyed the running states of biology major subjects in 16 colleges of education. The results of the study are as follows. First, some contents in secondary school biology have overlapped among physiology, embryology, cell biology, genetics, molecular biology, and biochemistry. In the quantity of major subjects presented in biology textbooks of secondary school, there was in order of animal physiology (27.9%), cell biology (11.3%), molecular biology (8.4%), environmental biology (8.3%), plant physiology (7.0%), genetics (6.5%), ecology (5.7%), animal embryology (5.6%), evolutionistics (5.5%), plant taxonomy (4.1%), animal taxonomy (4.1%), biochemistry (3.4%). But, animal morphology, plant morphology, microbiology, and plant embryology had the quantity under 1%. Second, most of colleges run the basic completion subjects by essential or selective courses, but didn't run the experimental courses in many subjects. Among the basic completion subjects, plant embryology was not run in all colleges and morphology was run in few colleges. Environmental biology and evolutionistics, not basic completion subjects, were run only in few colleges although those had many quantities in the secondary school biology textbooks. These results may provide the basis to improve on the basic completion subjects for the biology teacher training institutes. The study also suggests it is necessary to run the major subjects by considering the secondary school biology contents.
