A Study on The Eugene Joseff's Costume Jewelry Works Appeared in Movie

Abstract

In designing movie costume, in spite that accessories, jewelry and props are an important part of deciding characters’ impressions like a dress, researches on them are still not enough. The study aims to explore the characteristics of Joseff's works and the effects of Joseph on the history of costume jewelry. This study was processed by literature search. The results through Joseff’s works are as follows. The excellence of Joseff's work was appeared in wide-range genres of movies created by Hollywood from masterpiece, monumental work, costume play to current theater. Joseff secured his position as a jewelry designer in movie costuming by forming accurate background research of dress and its ornamentation. He also disclosed that jewelry harmonized with dresses in the design of movie dress was an important element controlling actor/actress’ impressions. Influenced by exotic trends, Joseff designed a number of jewelry pieces based on exotic materials from the Middle East or tropical area. This showed that socio-cultural elements had a significant effect on jewelry. Joseff designed a lot of foreign-type jewelry with good design and peculiar matter for all the people, having nothing to do with gender. It was examined that it was highly appreciated for him to expand the scope of jewelry in the side of history. Especially, it was inquired that Joseff's jewelry design had high efficiency, for there were many superb works well expressing characters with uniqueness and pricelessness, to the degree of one work being repeatedly used in numbers of movies. Hereby, Joseff laid the groundwork of designing jewelry with the basis of periodical style. He enriched background of movie. In addition he created an opportunity to bring the importance of jewelry designing in movie history into reality.
