Abstract

For Adrienne Rich, writing a poem is dreaming of the world of possibility, two of whose wheels are change and alliance. For this purpose she has ripped up the conventional use of language, revealed the damages that patriarchal values had made, and envisioned the possibility of the common language. Writing a poem is also, she argues, empowering the powerless who have long been posited to be feminine in the white-male-centered society. Consequently she has created a linguistic space in which their stories of fear, anger and frustration can be heard. Focusing on these two aspects of Rich's poetics, this paper chronologically follows her books of poems and illuminates the poetic transformation she has made out of her personal life experiences.
