- Abstract
- The National Academic Achievement Test aims to diagnose the level of students' achievement on the basis of the national curriculum and use that information to improve the school system. In spite of such a significant role that the test plays in Korean educational setting, its effectiveness as a state-level test has rarely been studied. In this paper, we compared the contents of middle school English textbooks with those of the national academic achievement test in terms of four skills. There were two research questions: 1) Are activities in the textbooks and test items in the national academic achievement test reflective of the 7th national curriculum?; 2) Are activities in the textbooks and test items in the national academic achievement test compatible in their adherence to the 7th national curriculum? The results indicated that both textbooks and the test failed to rigorously follow the national curriculum; in particular, the national academic achievement test was quite problematic in terms of validity. It not only covered four skills unevenly but also poorly reflected the achievement criteria of the national curriculum to its test items. Therefore, its validity as a state -exam should be seriously questioned. The paper concludes with pedagogic implications.
