Abstract
Objectives:We conducted this study to investigate the prevalence of depressive symptoms and risk factors related with the depressive symptoms of women in Gyeongnam rural and urban area of South Korea. Methods:Total 6,832 women who participated in the 2009 Community Health Survey and matched by propensity score matching(PSM) to control the age were included. Demographic characteristics including regional difference, health-related behaviors and chronic illness were assessed by survey. Depressive symptoms were assessed by Korean version of Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression(CES-D). Chi-square analysis was conducted to see the differences between the prevalence of depressive symptoms in rural and that of urban area. Multiple linear regressions were conducted to confirm the influences of risk factors related with depressive symptoms in each area. Results:The prevalence of depressive symptoms of women in rural area was significantly higher than that of women in urban area after controlling for demographic characteristics, health-related behaviors and chronic illness. Smoking and body mass index(BMI) were related only with depressive symptoms of women in rural area(p<0.05), whereas problem drinking and diabetes were related with depressive symptoms of women in urban area, only(p<0.05). Conclusion:The depressive symptoms of rural women in Gyeongnam were significantly more prevalent than Gyeongnam urban women. When conducting future study on risk factors of depression in women, it is important to consider regional differences, as well as other factors that were shown to be related with depressive symptoms in this study.
