- Abstract
- Previous literature on teams shows that cultural diversity can either enhance or hinder team learning experiences. Limited research has identified strategies used to address critical issues when working in a culturally diverse team setting. This study explored critical issues experienced by culturally diverse teams and identified strategies used to address these critical issues. We interviewed both Asian international students and U.S. local students in the U.S. because most studies focused only on international students, neglecting U.S. students’ experiences with international students. The critical issues were caused largely by personal and cultural differences. We also discovered seven strategies (taking responsibility, setting a shared goal, improving language skills, showing respect, building cultural knowledge to break stereotype, building relationships, and learning from others) to cope with the teamwork challenges. Findings highlighted the importance of designing appropriate interventions for individuals to work in a diverse cultural setting and shed light on the direction of multicultural education studies.
