Experiences of the Local and Asian International Students in Culturally Diverse Teams in Higher Education in the U.S.: Critical Issues and Coping Strategies

Abstract

Previous literature on teams shows that cultural diversity can either enhance or hinder team learning experiences. Limited research has identified strategies used to address critical issues when working in a culturally diverse team setting. This study explored critical issues experienced by culturally diverse teams and identified strategies used to address these critical issues. We interviewed both Asian international students and U.S. local students in the U.S. because most studies focused only on international students, neglecting U.S. students’ experiences with international students. The critical issues were caused largely by personal and cultural differences. We also discovered seven strategies (taking responsibility, setting a shared goal, improving language skills, showing respect, building cultural knowledge to break stereotype, building relationships, and learning from others) to cope with the teamwork challenges. Findings highlighted the importance of designing appropriate interventions for individuals to work in a diverse cultural setting and shed light on the direction of multicultural education studies.

다문화 팀 활동에 관한 기존 연구들은 주로 문화적 다양성이 팀원들의 학습 경험을 촉진 시키거나 혹은 방해한다는 사실에 주목해왔다. 이에 반해 문화적으로 다양한 팀원들이 학습 활동을할 때 생기는 문제점과 이 상황에서 학생들이 어떠한 전략을 취하는지에 관한 연구는 많이 이루어지지 않고 있다. 본 연구는 미국 대학에서 문화적으로 다른 배경을 가진 다문화 팀 활동에서학생들이 경험하는 주요 이슈와 이를 위해 사용하는 대응 전략을 탐색하고자 하였다. 기존 연구들이 현지 학생들의 경험을 배제하고 외국인 유학생들에게만 초점을 맞추었다면, 본 연구는 미국고등교육 현장에서 현지 학생들과 아시아 유학생 모두의 경험을 함께 탐색하고자 하였다. 연구결과, 그들이 경험하는 주요 이슈는 주로 개인적, 문화적 차이에서 기인하고 있다는 것을 발견하였고, 팀 활동 과정에서 발생하는 이슈들에 대해 대처하기 위한 7가지 전략(책임감, 공동목표설정, 언어능력 향상, 서로에 대한 존중, 서로의 문화에 대해 이해하기, 인간관계 구축, 서로에게 배우기)을 확인할 수 있었다. 본 연구는 다양한 문화적 환경에서 활동하는데 필요한 역량 개발 및 고등교육에서 다문화 교육 프로그램·방향을 설정하는데 중요한 함의점을 시사한다.
