Abstract
Gajodo, located at Sadeungmyeon, Geojesi, the western part of Jinhae-bay, is the second largest island attached to Geoje island. In 2009, the bridge between Gajodo and Geoje was constructed. In the past, the region was abundant in fisheries resources, especially of fishery fishing, such as cod and herring. In addition, the island is the birthplace of Geoje-Hansan-Gajo Eogi Johap, a Korean fishery foundation estabilished in 1908. There are three Eochongyes in Gajodo; Changoe, Changdo, Changnae. These three all have the fishery right for the production of oyster, sea squirt, sea mussel, ark shell seed and small scale set-net fishery. However, due to the development of surrounding industrial complex there has been a decrease in fisheries resource and deterioration of fishing grounds thus resulting in a lower income for fishermen. This paper will help understand the actual state of fishing villages by investigating the operation of Eochongye and the use of fishery rights in Gajodo.
