- Abstract
- In this paper I addressed various causes of phonetic obstacles to prospective conference interpreters in interpreting English into Korean. I argued that phonetic and phonological differences between Korean and English can cause various problems with English listening comprehension, which is essential for successful interpretation of English to Korean. Among the causes of phonetic obstacles in Korean interpreters' English listening comprehension are English syllable structure, rhythm, stress system, phonological phenomena such as liaison, assimilation and deletion, and weak forms of English function words. These factors can hinder Korean students' English listening comprehension and their performance in interpreting English to Korean. It is important for Korean interpreting schools to train prospective interpreters extensively so that they can have outstanding English listening comprehension abilities. I argued that the interpreting schools need to include courses in English phonetics and phonology in their educational curriculum and teach their students English sound systems.
