Abstract
The number of foreigners has increased rapidly since the 1990s in Korea. As a result, foreigner-dense areas which had been confined to the particular areas became expanded into the whole area of the nation. However, the policies about the current foreigner-dense areas, led by the government have a limit in that the government only approaches on a basis of macro level like local government unit and is partially inclined to provide measures for the expansion of foreigner-social welfare facilities and the crime prevention against foreigners. Therefore, it is judged that the identification about the present conditions and characteristics of foreigner-dense areas from the position of local government instead of depending on the government-led policies should be made and the support and management methods tailored to the concentrated areas are needed. In this regard, this study intends to find reasons why foreigner-concentrated areas are gathered in some areas by identifying the spatial distribution characteristics of foreign residents in local small and medium-sized cities. The analysis results show that the identification about the present conditions and characteristics of foreigner-dense areas in more micro spatial level like 'Dong' or smaller spatial unit is needed. In addition, based on the study results, support and management methods tailored to foreigner-dense areas should be provided.
