dc.description.abstractPretreatment of wastepaper using aqueous glycerolunder high pressure was studied to enhance the enzymatichydrolysis. The pretreatment was conducted over a widerange of conditions including temperatures of 150~170oC, sulfuricacid concentrations of 0.5~1.5%, and reaction times of30~90 minutes. After the effect of glycerol concentration onthe pretreatment performance was investigated, 70% glycerolwas selected. As glycerol concentration was increased, higherdigestibility was achieved due to higher lignin removal. Theoptimum condition was found to be around 160oC, 1%, and60 minutes. At this condition, 60% and 35% of hemicelluloseand lignin, respectively, were removed, while only 5% of cellulosewas lost. The enzymatic digestibility was 76%, meaningthat 73% of the glucan present in the initial substrate wasrecovered as glucose after enzymatic hydrolysis. Also, it wasfound that the temperature and acid concentration than thereaction time were more strongly related to the compositionalremovals and enzymatic digestibility.-
