Abstract
Based upon Walter Benjamin’s theoretical frame of translation, this paper tries to illuminate the dialogical relationship between Bishop as a translator of Brazilian poet Carlos Drummond de Andrade and Bishop as a poet who explored the matter of the inscrutable home in her middle poetic career. Specifically, taking notice of the fact that Bishop selected Brazilian poems dealing with family issues, it describes poetic connections to link her translation to her own poetic creation. Ultimately, this paper suggests that Bishop’s experience of translation not only reflects her real-life experiences of living in Brazil but also serves a useful context for understanding her conscious efforts to overcome the long-held trauma over the breakdown of her home.
