- Abstract
- This paper is the research on a textual analysis of Ju Si-Gyeong’sGugeo-Munbeop(that is, The Korean Grammar, 1910). Ju Si-Gyeong(1876-1914) is the pioneer in the study of Korean grammar and hewaked up language nationalism. Gugeo-Munbeop is the showpiece ofJu Si-Gyeong because it has the creative and analytical skills andsystematic approach for Korean language.
In this study, I looked into Gugeo-Munbeop with text linguisticmethods that focused on the context, the producer of the text and theaudience, the form and contents. The results of this paper as follows;First, the preface(序) reveals Ju Si-Gyeong’s awareness of the modernKorean language and sets the researchers and teachers of Koreanlanguage to be main readers. Second, the body text has the metatextualelements that connect the contents of each chapter. In addition,the text has specific differences in the descriptive ways. They havesomething in common that are definitions and explanations of grammar,serving as an example [본], the replacement device as described [풀이]/[알이], to prevent misconceptions [잡이]. But in syntax, there areexplanatory diagrams[그림] that promote the readers’ understanding ofthe text. Third, Gugeo-Munbeop is characterized as a mixed work ofthe grammar text and grammar educational text.
Gugeo-Munbeop is a classic study of the Korean grammar andbilingual education and awareness of modern languages reveal typicallythe aspects of the visible text.
