- Abstract
- Purpose: The purpose of this study was to review journal articles on nurses' communication in order toidentify overall trends in nursing communication and to suggest strategies to improve communication education.
Methods: Research that analyzed communication were selected from journal articles in Korea from 2004 to2013 and were reviewed, except review articles. A total of 33 articles were collected.
Results: Most research studies used a non-experimental design. Communication ability was measured byvarious instruments; Global Interpersonal Communication Competency (GICC), Primary CommunicationInventory (PCI), ICU Nurse-Physician Questionnaire, communication type, satisfaction, facilitative communication.
Nurses’ communication was found to be related to organizational commitment, self leadership, criticalthinking, self-esteem, professional competency and burnout. General characteristics of nurses, including age,education, marital status, position, and practice on experience of psychiatric nursing practice were also associatedwith communication.
Conclusion: These results will be used to provide basic data for nursing leaders. The next phase of researchon communication will require use of various approaches and research methods and indicate directions forfurther research.
