- Abstract
- This paper examines the organizational aspects of microfinance which has limitedly developed in South Korea although the number of people who suffer from the lack of credit has been increasing. It distinguishes microfinance from traditional credit union with regard to governing costs, ways of mobilizing financial resources, and the relative priority of loan vs. saving. The analysis of organizational aspects of microfinance can inform of the reasons why credit union has not been sufficient to resolving the lack of credit in the under developed regions. The paper then scrutinizes three major organizational modes of microfinance: corporation, credit union, and civil organization. It has found that the move of microfinance from civil organization into corporation rather than credit union could be explained by the relative low costs of running the organization to the credit union. Lastly, it discusses future development of microfinance in South Korea, suggesting mutual learning from each other and introduction of community development financial institutions.
