- Abstract
- This paper analyzes what socio-demographic and economic factors exert a strong influence on changes in rice intake in the last decade (2001 to 2011). Among various socio-economic factors, age, personal income, gender, household structure, female employment rate, frequency and places of take food away from home are selected as explanatory variables in an individual rice intake model. Differently from previous studies, we employed a quantile regression model in order to find out a distinct difference in impacts of socio- economc factors across rice intake quantile groups. Empirical results show that (i) a decline in the portion of those whose average daily intake of rice ranges between 148gram and 287gram accounts for decreasing rice intake over the last decade, (ii) factors influencing rice intake are different in terms of their magnitude and significance level across the quantiles of rice intake distribution, (iii) the most influential factors causing a decrease in the rice intake were age, income and eating out effects, and (iv) in order to counteract currently decreasing trend of rice intakes, appropriate policy programs should be designed to be differentiated across the quantiles of rice intakes.
