Abstract

In recent years, recovering the function of small and medium cities has become one of the most important issues. Successful urban development directions should be satisfied with economic, social, cultural, industrial and physical needs of residents. This study aims to suggest the desirable urban development directions based on the analysis of characteristics of economic, social, industrial, cultural, and physical aspects in small and medium cities. Based on the results of experts questionnaire surveys, it conducts an analysis on the importance of urban indexes and drew some critical points that have an important effect on urban development. The relationship between the division of urban divisions and individual urban indexes are evaluated by multiple regression analysis. This study found out that the division of urban economic is the most important division in any other urban divisions. In the urban economic divisions, the indexes of increasing quality of life and enterprise are strongly necessary to induce people and industry from other regions. For the urban industrial divisions, to identify regional characters enables local cities to grow not only local industries but also relative industries of regional characters. For the urban social divisions, it is necessary to provide diverse housing types, education opportunities, and social welfares to the age and the one-person family. For the urban cultural divisions, the history and culture heritage of local communities can be developed as local strategy industry. Furthermore, mixed land use development and integration of land use and transportation are required to provide the easy access of residents to CBD or downtown for physical urban policies.
