Abstract
This paper discusses translation problems due to the syntactic differences between Korean and English, focusing on the differences in subcategorization of verbs. Demand type verbs of English are subcategorized differently from ask type verbs, whereas Korean verbs equivalent to English verbs are subcategorized in the same way. Also believe type verbs are subcategorized differently from want type verbs even though they appear to be of the same type in subcategorization patterns. If translators are not familiar with the differences in the subcategorization of verbs, they may make errors translating Korean into English. To avoid such errors it is important for Korean-into-English translators to know the differences in syntactic properties of verbs which appear to be of a similar type. It is also necessary for translation schools to teach students about the unique syntactic properties of verbs, particularly those which may differ from language to language.
