- Abstract
- The purpose of this study was to analyze secondary school English teachers’ perception of English digital textbooks and to suggest better ways to develop and use them. The study aimed to answer the following research questions: (1) How much information do the teachers have on the introduction of English digital textbooks to secondary schools?; (2) How do the teachers perceive on the need of English digital textbooks?; (3) What are the positive effects of English digital textbooks?; (4) What are the negative effects of English digital textbooks? A survey was conducted of 80 secondary English teachers in Busan and Gyeongnam. In-depth interviews were also conducted with 10 teachers. The results showed that most teachers haven’t used a digital textbook although they were well aware of it. Many teachers also responded that it would be necessary to develop a English digital textbook. Further, they perceived these textbooks would positively affect students’ learning motivation, attitude and academic achievement. However, the teachers also felt that digital textbooks would impose burdens on them for preparing classes, and managing computer equipments as well as make it difficult for students to focus on class. The pedagogical implications were also discussed.
