- Abstract
- The purpose of this study was to shed light on the importance of morphological knowledge in Korean grammar education, based on a comprehensive and in-depth review of the literature in this field. A morpheme is the smallest meaningful unit of language. It seems that the concept of the morpheme has not been fully described in school Korean grammar. Korean morphological education should be studied in terms of language and thought, being taken into practices from the perspective of exploration and language awareness. Language awareness is curiosity and inquiry spirit about language itself. Korean morphemes are to be analyzed from the view that they are the tools to explore Korean language. To apply this view to the real class, unfamiliar language materials should be presented to students, and the teacher is encouraged to provide students with enough time for them to think and analyze morphemes. Moreover, teachers are to design the classroom activities to motivate students to compare, analyze, and synthesize corpus. The morphological knowledge should be considered not as fragments or dead grammar, but as live morphological knowledge.
