- Abstract
- Seoul metro system, one of the biggest metro systems in the world, has been suffering passenger delay from alighting gate (often boarding gate) particularly during peak hours. Seoul metro operators have sought to alleviate these congestions by the installation of automatic fare collection (AFC) system using RF(Radio Frequency) technology since 1999 but the problem still remains. This study develops a methodology to estimate gate delay only using smart card data from Seoul metro AFC system, where we adopt conventional queuing theory for the estimation. This study first tries to extract platoons with passenger delay at alighting gate. For each selected platoon, conventional queueing theory is applied to estimate total passenger delay. Not only the methodology is validated from video based field data but also 6 day smart card data is examined to analyze time-space distribution of passenger delay across multiple alighting gates, and evaluate feasibility of the delay estimation. We expect this study provides a step-stone for metro operators to control the congestion at the AFC gates based on the delay estimation. By using the methodology proposed in this study, operators easily estimate delay at the AFC gates, evaluate multiple stations synthetically, and make a decision on gate metering strategy.
